Body Of Lies Movie Review

Just the other day I was thinking that there was a shortage of real world spy movies in the current lineup. I'm not talking about James Bond or Mission Impossible but rather movies like Syriana and The Kingdom. When Body Of Lies came out I had great expectations from this movie because I wanted to know how it deals with the sensitive subject matter of terrorism.

With big names such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe leading the cast and directed by Ridley Scott, Body Of Lies has all the right production components to yield an excellent action movie. All that is left is how the movie deals with the issue of terrorism. As expected, Body Of Lies portray Islamic extremists as the bad guys coordinating suicide bombings while the CIA tracks them via satellite imaging hoping to nab their leader. Body Of Lies is a good movie despite its controversial subject matter that might offend certain demographic groups. That being said, Body Of Lies is a work of fiction and its accuracy with relation to the real world is debatable.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Review

Back in the 90s Indiana Jones was one of my favorite adventure hero. What's not to like about adventures in exotic and wondrous locales with storylines that are set on keeping you on the edge of your seat. Well with a hiatus of 19 years since Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the legendary whip splashing adventurer and professor of archaeology is back in his latest movie: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

I picked up the two-disc Special Edition DVD of the movie for Christmas last year to complete my collection of all released Indiana Jones movies. The truth is I had totally forgotten about it until a few weeks ago when I was cleaning my room. After watching it I must say that the original Indy flair and finesses is prevalent and very much alive in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Indy 4). Although Indy has aged quite a bit since his last outing he still managed to pull off his signature tricks of the trade like swinging from his whip and surviving huge waterfall drops.

Oh, did I mention that Indy 4 is produced by George Lucas (Starwars anyone?) and directed by the famous Steven Spielberg. When those two big shots of Tinseltown get together and work on a project you know to expect high production values and entertainment in the end result. Saw V Movie Review

Last night I watched Saw 5 with my boo out of boredom. First things first, this is the first and only Saw movie I have watched. This proved to be a major handicap as I struggled to make sense of the movie's inter-winding storyline which in one way or another make references to the previous movies in the Saw series.

Saw 5 is a direct sequel of Saw 4, continuing the story even further. As a brief synopsis with no major spoilers intended, Saw 5 focuses on extreme psychotic rehabilitation "treatments" (a.k.a. gory and violent self torture) taken by self proclaimed vigilantes as a mean to pass judgment on bad people who have legally eluded justice. That sounds quite mild considering the explicit hardcore gory "torture porn" sequences that are shown frequently onscreen.

If you are bored and old enough to legally watch Saw 5, I think it is best to have seen the previous movies before hand. And if after watching the first movie compels you to continue on to find out what happens in the end, then by all means do so. Just make sure there are no minors with you then for the movies can scar them for life.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa Movie Review

I first knew about Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa through the merchandized toys a certain famous fast food chain restaurant was bundling with their children's set meal. I didn't watch it on the big screen though. Instead, I picked it up when it came out on DVD and watched it with the whole family. I gotta admit that the first Madagascar movie is fun and entertaining to watch and I was hoping for more from Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.

Like its predecessor, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is a wholesome fun movie for the family. With ample comedy antics and straight forward slapstick humour, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa will give you lots of laughter and keep you smiling throughout the movie. If you liked the first movie, you can't go wrong with this one. If you haven't seen the first movie, go ahead and pick both up to add to your movie collection. They sure come in handy when you have a family gathering and you don't have any good family movies to watch(spoken from my own experience).

City Of Ember Movie Review

After more than a week of hiatus for my Chinese New Year 2009 holidays I am finally back albeit not in full health. It is sad to spend 80% of my holidays being sick with 50% of that time bedridden due to fever and flu. And with the current heavy monsoonal rainfall where I live, it is hard not to get caught up in the bad weather. It is also sad to know of several reports of landslides in the city due to the continuous heavy downpour of rain. It is better to be safe than sorry so staying indoors at home is a better option.

One of the movies what I watched during the holidays is City Of Ember. This is another movie adaptation of a novel, with the original source written by Jeanne DuPrau published in 2003. In a nutshell, City Of Ember is an adventure movie focusing on a couple of 12 year olds, Lina Mayfleet (Saoirse Ronan) and Doon Harrow (Harry Treadaway) on their quest to find the exit of the underground City Of Ember to discover the surface of the world. There is hardly any explanation as to what drove the humans to seek shelter in the self contained underground City Of Ember but it is a good guess that it was some kind of global apocalyptic event.

In truth I had high expectations prior to watching City Of Ember. It has an interesting plot but it is a letdown to know that its execution is not done to its fullest potential. In its defense I think movie-goers who are looking for a family friendly movie to watch will find that City Of Ember is an "Okay" choice if they have exhausted other better movies out there.
